ASVAB Shop Information Practice Test

Written by Chris, Certification Exam Content Specialist

Preparing for the ASVAB Shop Information subtest? This free practice test gives you 20 original Shop Information questions with a 12-minute time limit so you can practice identifying tools, understanding shop terminology, and applying basic shop knowledge under time pressure.

The 12-minute limit is designed around the current CAT-ASVAB Shop Information pace. The official CAT-ASVAB gives 6 minutes for 10 scored Shop Information questions, which works out to an average of about 36 seconds per scored question. The actual ASVAB uses an overall subtest time limit rather than giving you exactly 36 seconds for every question.

These are original practice questions, not actual ASVAB questions. The ASVAB program does not provide its actual test questions to third-party preparation websites.

About This Shop Information Practice Test

The official ASVAB program describes Shop Information (SI) as measuring knowledge of tools and shop terminology and practices. Official sample questions include practical knowledge involving items such as sanding blocks, clamps, and handsaws.

This practice test expands that general shop-knowledge focus into questions covering common tools, their purposes, terminology, measurements, fastening methods, materials, and basic shop practices.

The questions on this page are written specifically for practice. They are not copied from the ASVAB, and your score on this quiz does not predict or reproduce an official ASVAB score.

Why does this practice test use 12 minutes?

The official CAT-ASVAB currently allows 6 minutes for 10 scored Shop Information questions when no tryout questions are included. That corresponds to an average pace of 36 seconds per scored question.

This practice test doubles both the number of questions and the corresponding time:

20 questions × 36 seconds = 720 seconds = 12 minutes

The purpose is to give you a useful timed practice session without suggesting that the official ASVAB assigns a fixed amount of time to each individual question.

What Is Shop Information on the ASVAB?

Shop Information is one of the ASVAB’s Science/Technical subtests. The official description is straightforward: it measures knowledge of tools, shop terminology, and shop practices.

In practical terms, preparation involves becoming familiar with common shop equipment and understanding what different tools and materials are used for. You should be able to recognize basic shop terminology and distinguish between tools designed for different tasks.

The official ASVAB sample questions provide examples of this practical approach. Rather than testing only definitions, the questions can ask you to identify the appropriate tool or understand how a common shop item is used.

CAT-ASVAB vs. Paper-and-Pencil ASVAB

Shop Information is handled differently depending on the ASVAB format.

ASVAB format

Shop Information

CAT-ASVAB

Shop Information (SI) is administered as a separate subtest

Paper-and-pencil ASVAB

Auto Information and Shop Information are combined into the Auto & Shop Information (AS) subtest

On the CAT-ASVAB, Auto Information and Shop Information are administered separately but are combined for the AS score. On the paper-and-pencil version, they are administered together as AS.

How Many Shop Information Questions Are on the ASVAB?

For the current CAT-ASVAB, the official table lists:

  • 10 scored Shop Information questions
  • 6 minutes without tryout questions
  • Up to 15 tryout questions
  • 17 minutes when tryout questions are included

The 36-second figure is therefore an average pace, not a separate official time limit for every question.

That distinction matters when practicing. Some questions will take less time, while others may require more thought. The goal is to become comfortable moving through the subtest without spending too much time on a single item.

Is Shop Information Part of the AFQT?

No.

Shop Information is not one of the four subtests used to calculate the AFQT.

The official ASVAB program identifies these four subtests as the components of the AFQT:

  • Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
  • Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
  • Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
  • Word Knowledge (WK)

The AFQT is used for enlistment eligibility, while ASVAB results also contribute to the military’s process for assigning applicants to occupations. The specific requirements for military occupations depend on the applicable service and its qualification standards.

So although Shop Information does not contribute to your AFQT, it should not be treated as irrelevant if you are preparing for an ASVAB that includes it.

What Should You Study for Shop Information?

The official ASVAB description is broad rather than a published chapter-by-chapter syllabus. It focuses on tools, shop terminology, and practices.

A practical review should therefore concentrate on understanding what common shop tools do, when they are used, and how shop terminology is applied.

Measuring and Layout

Review common measuring and marking concepts used in shop work.

Focus on:

  • Reading measurements
  • Basic measuring tools
  • Marking and layout
  • Selecting an appropriate measuring or marking tool

The goal is not simply to memorize tool names. You should understand the purpose of the tool and the type of task for which it is appropriate.

Cutting Tools

Become familiar with common cutting tools and their uses.

Practice distinguishing between tools that may look similar but are designed for different jobs. Understanding what a tool is intended to cut and how it is normally used is more useful than memorizing isolated definitions.

Holding, Clamping, and Fastening

Review common methods used to hold or secure materials during shop work.

This can include:

  • Clamps
  • Vises
  • Common fasteners
  • Basic fastening terminology

Official ASVAB sample material includes questions involving clamps, making this a useful example of the practical tool knowledge represented by the SI subtest.

Drilling and Threading

Review the basic purpose of drills, drill bits, and threading tools.

Pay attention to the difference between tools and the jobs they perform. When studying, ask yourself:

What does this tool do, and when would I choose it?

Woodworking

Review common woodworking tools and terminology.

You do not need to memorize every tool found in a professional workshop. Concentrate on commonly encountered equipment and understand the basic purpose of each tool.

Metalworking

Review basic metalworking tools, terminology, and applications.

Focus on recognizing the difference between tools used to cut, shape, hold, or finish metal.

Welding, Soldering, and Brazing

Understand the basic purpose of these joining processes and the terminology associated with them.

The goal is to recognize fundamental differences rather than memorize advanced trade-school material.

Shop Safety

Basic safety knowledge is important whenever working with tools and shop equipment.

Review:

  • Safe tool handling
  • Protective equipment
  • Common shop hazards
  • Safe working practices
  • Basic fire-safety terminology

Keep this section focused on practical knowledge rather than turning the page into a general occupational-safety guide.

How to Prepare for the Shop Information Subtest

Learn Tools by Function

Don’t study a tool name without learning what it does.

For example, when you encounter an unfamiliar tool, ask:

What task is this tool designed to perform?

Understanding function makes it easier to distinguish between similar tools when answering multiple-choice questions.

Compare Similar Tools

Some questions become easier when you know the difference between two tools that perform related tasks.

Instead of memorizing separate definitions, compare them:

  • What does each tool do?
  • What material is it normally used with?
  • What makes one appropriate for a particular task?

Practice Shop Terminology

The official description specifically includes shop terminology, so don’t focus only on pictures of tools. Review the terms used to describe common shop equipment, processes, materials, and practices.

Practice Choosing the Appropriate Tool

When studying, turn definitions into practical questions:

If I needed to perform this task, which tool would I use?

That approach helps you apply the information rather than simply recognize vocabulary.

Practice at a Controlled Pace

The current CAT-ASVAB timing works out to approximately 36 seconds per scored Shop Information question on average.

Use that figure as a practice pacing target, not as a rule that every question must be answered in exactly 36 seconds.

If one question is taking too long, make your best decision and keep moving when the test format permits it.

Review Your Mistakes

Don’t immediately retake the quiz after getting an answer wrong.

First, determine why you missed it:

  • Did you not know the tool?
  • Did you confuse two similar tools?
  • Did you misunderstand the terminology?
  • Did you choose a tool that performs a related but different task?
  • Did you rush the question?

Fixing the underlying knowledge gap is more useful than simply memorizing the answer.

The official ASVAB preparation guidance also recommends becoming familiar with the subtest content, using sample questions, and reviewing areas where your skills need refreshing. It notes that technical courses can also help with preparation for technical subtests such as Shop Information.

How to Use Your Practice-Test Results

Your score can help identify where to spend your study time.

If you missed several questions involving tools, review tool names and functions.

If you struggled with measurements or terminology, spend more time reviewing those concepts.

If you missed questions about fastening, materials, or shop practices, focus on understanding the differences between common methods and their appropriate uses.

If safety questions were difficult, review the basic safety principles associated with shop work.

After reviewing your weak areas, take another practice test and compare your performance.

The goal isn’t simply to increase a percentage on one quiz. The goal is to become more comfortable recognizing the correct tool, terminology, or shop practice when you encounter a new question.
